Variety is reporting that Dimension Films is already looking at a sequel to the non-blockbuster but well received Piranha 3D. Though the film opened at No. 6 (somewhat low for something to get a sequel green lit so quickly), reviews have been quite positive.

It looks as though Mark Canton will produce again but it's a little soon to have word yet on who will direct or even write the script.

"I'm delighted because the sequel is something we've clearly been talking about," Canton said. "With the really popular response of the audience, both here and in England, it has cemented our going to the script phase. We know it was a bifurcated weekend at the domestic box office, but we had the lowest drop of any film on Sunday night."

Piranha 3D was directed by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes 2006) and penned by Peter Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg (Sorority Row). The cast includes Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O'Connell, Ving Rhames, Eli Roth, Richard Dreyfuss and Christopher Lloyd.
